I always love watching the NBA All Star game each year – above all other similar gatherings of the best of the best in sports. Apart from the sheer, astounding athleticism of the participants, one of the things I like best about it is that you see lots of examples of great, Hall of Fame level players shaking their heads in awe and genuine admiration of one of their peers.
What the heck does that have to with iPhone art, you might ask. Well, it’s a little lead-in to the work of iPhone artist Steve John. Here’s a recent quote from our friend David Scott Leibowitz – creator of the superb iCreated app we featured a couple days ago - encouraging us to hurry up and discover Steve’s work:
I been making art, looking at art, have lots of artist friends over the past 30 years, and I have never seen anyone so talented. The movies give you an even greater appreciation of his work.
He has made it difficult to post some of my own art to different Flickr groups we both belong to, because every day, he raises the bar higher!
That’s some powerful praise. The sort of praise from a peer that had me rushing to do just what David suggested – and boy am I glad I did!
Steve John’s work is striking and powerful. The movies that David refers to in the quote above are videos that capture the process as Steve creates iPhone artworks. Even to a complete non-artist type like me, the layering and complexity of what he packs into each piece seems amazing. I’m sure I’m not coming close to fully appreciating the process itself, but still find it fascinating.
Here are a couple of screencaps of the ‘in progress’ stage of two of his movies:
If you like great iPhone art and seeing how it is made, or even just NBA All Star games at those moments when Magic Johnson shakes his head at a bit of wizardry from Kobe, you should definitely go look at Steve’s YouTube page HERE as soon as you can. Also, set aside some time to browse through all the wonderful iPhone artwork at his Flickr stream HERE.
